What if we told you that an hour from the city of Milan, in Morcote, Canton Ticino, there is a magical place, out of time, in which to immerse yourself and experience unique moments? Well yes, near Milan there is this place, nicknamed the “garden of wonders” because inside it there are really incredible things hidden.
We are talking about Scherrer Park. More than a park this place is an open-air museum. Inside it are art objects from a variety of countries and eras. What makes it enchanting is the spectacular view and the lush nature all around, but not just any plants. Subtropical flora embraces this place: palms, camellias, wisteria, oleanders, cedars, cypresses, camphor trees, eucalyptus, magnolias, azaleas, oranges, lemons, bamboo, and many species of plants and flowers.
What you can find inside the wonder garden
In addition to rich, almost heavenly vegetation, inside the “wonder garden” you will find works of art that will take you far away. For example, the Erechtheion, the second temple of the Acropolis of Athens, brought back to a scale of 1:4, supported by magnificent caryatids. Or through a bamboo forest to the Egyptian temple of Nefertiti . And then statues inspired by classical myths such as those of Venus, Juno, Jupiter and Mercury. Also, an Arab house and Indian mansions painted in the Mughal style.
A place that has the unbelievable. And one that leaves all visitors astonished. The garden is part of the prestigious “Great Italian Gardens” chain.
How the park was created
The “garden of wonders” is the brainchild of Hermann Arthur Scherrer (1881 – 1956), an entrepreneur in the textile industry. He was a great traveler and collector of works of art. The garden represents this man’s dream of creating something wonderful that represented his love of travel and art. 9 years after the death of the creator of such enchantment, his wife left the park to the municipality of Morcote to open it to the public.
Admission is free and the park can be visited daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In summer (July and August) until 6 p.m. and then again until 5 p.m. from September to November. As the garden of wonders near Milan, it is perfect for a day trip out of town.
