The Opera Prison, a few kilometers from Milan, is not only one of the largest detention institutions in Italy, but also a place where detention merges with the possibility of rebirth. Within its walls, in fact, an unusual initiative comes to life: a lutherie workshop that transforms the age-old art of stringed instrument making into a path of regeneration for inmates, offering them a new perspective through manual and creative know-how.
The “Metamorphosis” project
The luthier project was born out of a desire to combine work, art and social engagement. Led by experienced master luthiers from the Stradivari Institute in Cremona, the workshop was launched with the aim of teaching inmates a refined and traditional craft, but also to give new life to a material symbolic of tragedy and hope.
The wood from which the instruments are made comes from migrant boats abandoned on Italian shores. The inmates build violins, violas and cellos, giving new life to those woods, which young people and families often rely on in search of a better future. The project is called “Metamorphosis,” and today it is an example of how prison can be a place of redemption.

Violins and luthier work
First, inmates are explained the work through the practical part but also theoretical lessons on violin making. Here, they learn how to work with wood, chisel, glue and finish each part of the violin, thus developing technical and artistic skills. As a result, the inmates not only produce high-quality instruments, but also gain more discipline and learn a craftsmanship trade. The violins produced have been used for outstanding performances, for example that of the Orchestra del Mare, an ensemble born out of this project, which performed at the famous Teatro alla Scala.
The Opera prison regularly organizes visits to the workshop with schools and associations to raise awareness of the project and the human value it brings. It is often possible to speak directly with the master luthiers and a few inmates, who together explain and show all the craftsmanship behind it. The project and its presentation in the prison helps to raise awareness about rehabilitation and the dignity of inmates.
