Jazz is not just music, but pure emotion that runs through the soul. The warm notes of the saxophone, the pulsating rhythm of the double bass and the vibrant harmonies of the piano evoke the electrifying atmosphere of New Orleans nights. Welcoming you will be the San Fedele Auditorium, a unique space in the heart of Milan, famous for its state-of-the-art acoustics and intimate, cozy atmosphere, ideal for fully immersing yourself in the excitement of live music. Here, on selected dates in the coming months, you can let yourself be carried away by a repertoire that ranges from ragtime rhythms to the most authentic blues, with moments of pure improvisation, the very essence of jazz.
What is We call it Jazz?
We call it Jazz is a live jazz show that celebrates the infectious swing of the genre. While talented musicians listen to each other, always searching for the next note, the audience can enjoy a cocktail at the bar of the San Fedele Auditorium. A curated lineup will transport you to the smoky bars and dynamic parades of New Orleans.
The origin of jazz
Born in Louisiana on the vibrant streets of New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the genre stems from the African-American communities of the South. The music is a unique combination of African musical traditions, Caribbean rhythms, ragtime and blues, but also call-and-response patterns that were unique to the black experience at the time.
These songs and melodies were first sung by slaves working in the cotton fields, and this pattern was incorporated into the way musicians played together, mixing some rehearsed parts with improvisation. To untrained ears, jazz sounds chaotic, but each riff is a beautiful surprise. As a result, jazz has evolved into a sound full of spontaneity, soul and rebellious spirit.
The experience
We call it Jazz offers an authentic jazz experience, similar to lively “hot jazz,” where incredibly skilled musicians boast fast tempos, bold improvisations with accentuated syncopation, and spirited solos. Reminiscent of great legends such as Louis Armstrong, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Billie Holiday, it gets you in the mood for great music, a glass of whiskey and a cigarette.
