Some songs capture a moment. Others encapsulate an entire life lived together.
This is the case with “Quando ti rivedrò,” the song written by Gino Paoli with music by Adriano Pennino and intended to be sung alongside Ornella Vanoni. A deep bond sealed by music, which has left an indelible mark on the history of Italian singer-songwriting.
A much-anticipated duet, but one that was never recorded due to Ornella’s passing, which occurred just a few days before the session. In her place came the trumpet of Paolo Fresu, a friend and collaborator of the singer. A choice capable of transforming absence into presence and giving voice to a bond that continues to live on in the music.
A story of music, memory, and missed encounters
The song tells the story of two people who reunite after a period of separation. A simple, almost everyday image that, in Paoli’s words, becomes a portrait of a deep bond: the memory of a friendship, a shared connection, and an artistic journey that can never be replicated.
Together, Gino Paoli and Ornella Vanoni brought to life some of the most beloved interpretations in Italian music, from “Senza fine” to “La gatta,” including “Il cielo in una stanza ” and “Sassi.” Songs that still today speak to their shared chemistry, made up of intimacy, irony, and a harmony that is impossible to replicate.
The release date thus takes on special significance. “Quando ti rivedrò” will be released on the night of September 22–23, straddling the birthdays of the two artists. The track will then be included in the reissue of *Appunti di un lungo viaggio*, set for release on September 25 via Sugar.
A journey through the melodies that have shaped the history of Italian music
Just like the music of Gino Paoli and Ornella Vanoni, the songs of the great Italian singer-songwriters have the power to transform a personal story into a universal emotion, capable of speaking to entire generations.
This is the magic of *Candlelight: Lucio Dalla and Other Italian Singer-Songwriters*: experiencing timeless melodies live by the light of hundreds of candles, letting ourselves be carried away by memories, encounters, and feelings that continue to resonate within us.
