Nothing says summer more than an evening of live jazz music, hosted in the garden of a rustic 19th-century Lombard mansion and accompanied by an aperitif made with local products. For one night only— on the first of August—a perfectly preserved historic home about an hour from Milan opens the doors to its rooms and garden even after sunset, allowing guests to experience the magic of a Lombard summer, all for just €15 per person: less than you’d spend on a spectacular and hearty aperitif in the city.
The Lombard jazz aperitif
“Aperitivo in jazz” is an evening that’s part of the FAI Summer Evenings initiative, a calendar of musical and cultural events where unconventional historic locations open their doors until after sunset. The event combines a tour of Casa Macchi (Morazzone, VA), live music featuring two professional jazz musicians, Nicola Tacchi and Fabio Buonarota, and an aperitif in the house’s courtyard.
The aperitif menu features focaccia, cold cuts, andthe “Caramamma” aperitif—a cocktail typical of Morazzone made with a local liqueur also called Caramamma, created by the historic Bar Caffè Caramamma and which has become a “local specialty” over the years . It’s an evening that captures the essence of summer, to be enjoyed in a quiet and intimate setting.
Casa Macchi: Where History Meets Everyday Life
Casa Macchi, in the center of Morazzone, is a late-19th-century family home that has remained incredibly well-preserved, as if the owners had simply stepped out for a moment to run an errand. The rooms, furnishings, and everyday objects offer a direct, unfiltered glimpse into the life of the Lombard middle class between the 19th and 20th centuries: the kitchen with its tableware, the living room with its knickknacks, and the bedrooms with their time-worn fabrics. The atmosphere is not that of a “perfect” museum, but of a domestic interior frozen in time, where even the worn furniture and small imperfections become part of the story.
Next to the residence, the garden and the historic general store complete the immersion into the world of the Macchi family and the village. The store, redesigned to resemble a old-fashioned grocery store, evokes the social role of small neighborhood shops—places not only for shopping but also for a friendly chat. The house also houses an important family archive, featuring letters, photographs, postcards, and diaries that recount the history of the Bottelli-Macchi family against the backdrop of the Risorgimento, the wars, and 20th-century Italy. This material transforms the visit into a sort of “family saga” to be explored room by room, in a continuous dialogue between private memory and collective history.
