If you’re on the hunt for little-known destinations for your next vacation, we reveal an enchanting place. Let’s talk about Burgau, nicknamed the “Santorini of Portugal!” It is a small fishing village overlooking the Atlantic, located in the western Algarve, about 20 minutes from Lagos. The comparison with the Greek island comes from the white alleys, the houses perched on the cliff, and the breathtaking views of the crystal clear sea, which make Burgau a charming and still authentic destination, far from the crowds of mass tourism.
What Burgau offers
You may be thinking,“but from Milan the direct flight to Santorini takes less than three hours!” Yes, but Santorini, especially in August, is quite expensive; of course we do not question its beauty, sometimes, however, a lesser known place can give you pleasant surprises…
Burgau is known for its collected and quiet beach, ideal for those seeking relaxation, clear water and golden sand. Even in high season, it maintains a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, with a decent selection of small restaurants and beach bars, perfect for enjoying fresh fish and typical Portuguese dishes. In addition to the sea, you can enjoy water sports and trips to the surrounding area, including Lagos and Sagres.
How to get to Burgau from Milan
From Milan you can fly directly to Faro with Ryanair or other low-cost airlines. In summer, prices for a round-trip flight average between 120 and 250 euros per person, but by booking in advance you can find deals even under 100 euros.
For the transfer from Faro to Burgau, you can rent a car from the airport (1h 10 min); or take a cab (more expensive). We do not recommend the train combined with the bus because it lengthens the travel time.
In high season, a double room in guesthouse, B&B or small hotel starts from about 80-120 euros per night.
In short, if you don’t want to spend a lot, booking in advance, this destination also allows you to enjoy your vacation without too many sacrifices.
