At the foot of the Gotthard Pass, surrounded by mountains and alpine passes including Oberalp and Gotthard, lies a small village of traditional wooden chalets. In winter, the village becomes a lively meeting place for winter sports enthusiasts, especially skiers and snowboarders. Here, the numerous peaks frame a ski area over 180 kilometers long, ideal for both beginners and experienced skiers. In summer, however, the resort becomes a paradise for hiking enthusiasts, with itineraries such as the Schöllenen Gorge and the Four Springs Trail offering spectacular panoramic views.
What to do? Glacier Express and Michelin-starred restaurants
In recent years, Andermatt, Switzerland, has seen a surge in tourism. Thanks to its splendor and ski facilities, the resort has become one of the most sought-after destinations, especially in the winter season, so much so that it has been included among the 50 best destinations to visit in 2026 by the famous magazine Leisure + Travel. Among the various activities that Andermatt offers, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and exclusive restaurants accessible by cable car stand out.
The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn is one of the most unique experiences you can have in Andermatt. It is a 144-kilometer-long, bright red railway that connects various Swiss towns. The section between Andermatt and Oberalppass is undoubtedly the most spectacular: here, the train climbs to 2,000 meters and offers passengers breathtaking views of the often snow-covered mountain landscape.
At an altitude of 2,340 meters, on the summit of Mount Gütsch, there are two gourmet restaurants. Both have been awarded a Michelin star and offer very different cuisines. Gütsch by Markus Neff is a Swiss haute cuisine restaurant that elegantly showcases local produce, while The Japanese at Gütsch is one of the highest Japanese fine dining restaurants in the world, connected to The Chedi Andermatt hotel, offering Japanese cuisine as “pure” as the alpine landscape that surrounds it. Both offer guests simply unparalleled mountain scenery.
