It is well known how much the Milanese love to escape to Liguria for a relaxing weekend by the sea, and soon reaching Genoa could be even easier and faster. Indeed, a major project is under discussion that could directly connect Milan’s new M6 subway line with the high-speed train. From Milan to Genoa by subway? Not yet, but almost.
The new mega station in Milan
The southern part of Milan is preparing to become a new national mobility hub with plans for a high-speed mega station between Opera and Locate Triulzi. This large rail hub, designed to facilitate direct passage from the future M6 subway to high-speed trains such as Frecciarossa and Italo, aims to make Milan and Genoa reachable in less than an hour. The idea is to alleviate traffic on the Central Station and offer residents and visitors a quick and convenient connection to the Ligurian Riviera, also taking advantage of the opening of the Third Valico and the strengthening of the line between Tortona and Milan.

The possible routes of the M6
Although the M6 line is still in the planning stage, initial assumptions about the route have already been made. In the early stages, it seemed that the option of a “circle line” with 37 stops from Quarto Oggiaro/Baranzate to Ponte Lambro, passing through neuralgic areas of the city such as Cadorna and Domodossola, was the most plausible. However, among today’s most concrete and discussed options is the via Ripamonti – Opera route, which would provide a direct interchange with the new high-speed station and enhance connections beyond just downtown Milan.
Institutional figures such as Undersecretary Alessandro Morelli, have stressed the need to think of the M6 outside the city limits, enhancing interregional connections. Certainly, Milan is preparing to build an even more articulated metro network, for which the Draghi government had already allocated 732.2 million euros earmarked for the feasibility study and initial design.
