The appearance of backpacks and notebooks on store shelves signals the inevitable end of summer. The return to school now has a specific start date for students in Milan and Lombardy as well, with the calendar officially set by the Region.
When will schools start in Milan?
The new school year will begin for most students on September 14, 2026, while the last day of classes is setfor June 8, 2027. However, schools and educational institutions have the option to start earlier, for justified reasons and subject to prior agreement with the relevant local authorities. In addition, schools may make appropriate adjustments to their school calendar, which may involve suspending classes for up to three days per year.
Who starts earlier?
In schools at all levels of education and for vocational education and training programs (elementary, lower secondary, and upper secondary), classes will officially begin on September 14, 2026. The situation is different for the youngest children: preschools will open their doors one week earlier, on September 7, 2026, and will conclude their academic year on June 30, 2027.
Christmas and Easter
The Christmas break will run from December 23 to 31, 2026, and classes will resume from January 2 to 5, 2027. In addition to these breaks, students in Lombardy will have a Carnival break, during which schools will be closed for the two days preceding the start of Lent. Finally, the Easter break will include the three days preceding Easter Sunday and will end on the Tuesday immediately following Easter Monday.

During the school year, students will have all Sundays and the holidays established by national law off.
