There is no Christmas without some festive music. In all the best holiday movies you always see the scene where city choirs knock on the doors of houses to sing so-called Christmas Carols. In Italy, ringing the doorbell and starting to sing is not such a common thing, especially in Milan, but Christmas concerts are and they are a must for the season. We have selected the best ones in town (some are free!).

Sparks of Music in the Duomo
In Milan’s Duomo, the Cameristi, White Voices Choir and Youth Choir of the Accademia Teatro alla Scala are set to enchant the cathedral with “Scintille di Musica.” An unmissable Christmas concert staged on Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m., conducted by Massimo Raccanelli. The program ranges from the Baroque of Vivaldi and Scarlatti to the exciting choral pages of Rutter, Gardner and Leontovych, offering a magical musical wish for the holiday season.

Milan Conservatory of Music
The Milan Conservatory of Music hosts on Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. the Christmas Concert entrusted to the pop/rock classes, conducted by Lorenzo Poli and Umberto Iervolino in the striking Verdi Hall. Admission is free by reservation, for an event that tells the more modern and contemporary side of Christmas in music.

Candlelight: the Christmas concerts
In the special Christmas Candlelight programming, Milan welcomes three exciting events inside the San Fedele Auditorium, dedicated to both traditional classics and the soundtracks of the most beloved holiday movies. The famous melodies will be interpreted by a string quartet in the light of thousands of candles, typical of Candlelight concerts. The quintessential Christmas atmosphere, giving an intimate and sparkling experience in the heart of the city.

Christmas in Musical
On stage at the Milan Fondazione Cariplo Auditorium is “Christmas in Musical,” a musical journey through the melodies of American Christmas: gospel, Broadway, 1950s and songs from the most famous animated films accompany the audience to the grand finale, the “Christmas Festival of Carols.” Alti & Bassi, the Symphony Orchestra, the White Voices Choir and the I Giovani di Milano Choir close the show under the direction of Massimo Fiocchi Malaspina.

The sky is full of stars
For music-loving Grinches, fear not: there are also concerts that are not exactly Christmas during December as well. On December 15, at the Piccolo Teatro Grassi, musicians Fabrizio Bosso and Julian Oliver Mazzariello pay tribute to the great Pino Daniele ten years after his death with the concert “The Sky is Full of Stars.” The latest chapter in their artistic partnership, a unique encounter between trumpet and piano that traverses the emotions of jazz music and the timeless melodies of the artist from Campania, at the most magical time of the whole year.
