The University of Milano-Bicocca launches an ambitious plan for sustainable mobility: five new bike stations by 2027, with services designed for students and staff.
After the first two velostations already in operation at the U6-Agorà building, with 178 bike spaces and 24 for scooters, the campus aims to become a national reference model.
And the real innovation? Showers, locker rooms and cycle shops available to those who choose to move around sustainably.
Velostations with showers and changing rooms: the campus adapts to cyclists
No more excuses for those who want to be part of the sustainable mobility change in Milan and attend the great university in northern Milan. Bicocca’s new bike stations are in fact ready to use, protected, video-monitored and equipped with two-story bike racks, as well as spaces to freshen up and change before classes or work.
A service that combines comfort and security, thanks to access via university badge and a small cycle workshop with tools for routine maintenance.
A model reminiscent of experiences already widespread on Northern European campuses, but which in Italy represents a concrete breakthrough.
From 2 to 5 Bike Stations by 2027: mobility becomes smart
The Bike to Bicocca project does not stop here. Within the next two years, the university plans to open three new velostations near the U2, U5 and U10 buildings.
A total of 500 bike spaces will be available, in a university area that is completely rethinking its internal logistics.
The first two facilities, which are already operational, follow extended hours (Monday through Friday until 10 p.m., Saturday until 6:30 p.m.) to meet the needs of those attending labs, evening classes or work shifts.
Sustainable mobility on campus: how habits and travel are changing
The project is part of a broader strategy of active and sustainable mobility, which aims to reduce emissions and improve the quality of life within the Milanese university.
Among the actions already underway:
- Free shuttle between Monza station and the Biomedical Campus;
- Discounts on TPL and Trenitalia season tickets;
- Agreements with sharing mobility services;
- Drafting of the 2021 Home-Work Commute Plan and ongoing surveys of student and staff flows.
These interventions contribute to making Bicocca a truly sustainable university citadel, in line with Goal 11 of UN Agenda 2030.
The “Bike to Bicocca” strategic plan: infrastructure, numbers and goals

At the heart of the project is the integration of infrastructure, technology and social behavior.
Each velostation is conceived as a multifunctional micro-hub: not just parking, but a community space where sustainability becomes part of daily life.
The plan, overseen by the Sustainability Sector and the University Mobility Manager, envisions by 2027:
- 5 equipped velostations,
- 500 bike spaces,
- an estimated 25 percent reduction in private car travel,
- a network of connections with the national MOST project – Center for Sustainable Mobility.
The University of Milano-Bicocca becomes a model for Italian university mobility.
With “Bike to Bicocca,” the Milanese university enters by right among the most innovative university experiences in Europe.
The challenge is not only infrastructural, but cultural: to transform the bicycle from a simple alternative means of transport to a daily tool for freedom, health and sustainability.
A model that other Italian universities – from Bologna to Turin – are already observing with interest.
And perhaps, soon, biking to class and taking a shower before the seminar will become the new normal on many Italian campuses.
