Just think that 2 hours from Milan there is a village, Chamois, with no vehicles and that you cannot even get to by car. It is the only Italian village that cannot be reached on 4 wheels. A pearl at 1800 meters of altitude, unspoiled nature, beauty and above all pure air. Something that is increasingly lacking in Milan these days, in summer the air is increasingly unbreathable.
You can’t get there by car also because the small roads are so narrow that there would be no way to get through. Either take the cable car from Buisson or get there by air by landing in the aliport present in the small village. You can also walk along the mule track or start from the commune of La Magdeleine. Chamois is full of events, initiatives and popular festivals. It is also perfect for nature and sports lovers.
Chamois, the car-free village
In addition to some historic buildings to visit, such as the Parish Church of St. Pantaleon dating back to 1681, there are several trekking routes in this village that offer incredible views, such as the ancient mule track or Ru des Novalles, two routes immersed in nature that are not to be missed if you pass by, as well as Lake Lod.
This is an alpine gem that looks like something out of an illustrated fairy tale book-you know Heidi’s pastures? Here, the lake opens up between larch forests and lush green meadows. The water is clear, still, and reflects the mountains like a mirror . There is no crowd, no noise, just the wind whispering voices of distant stories and the footsteps of you walking nearby filling your heart with beauty.
The Lake is an unavoidable scenic stop on the Matterhorn Balcony, a route through Valtournenche. You are hiking enthusiasts, take note.
Chamois is also perfect in winter. In fact, as many as 16 kilometers of ski slopes branch off from here. And if all this were not enough, we also point out the town’s musical festival in which electronic, experimental, classical and jazz music coexist, or the walk of flavors. A mouth-watering event not to be missed for all gourmets and for those who want to spend a day in the open air among local products, handicrafts, refreshment stands and entertainment. In short, a place not to be underestimated at all.
Then if you really want to disconnect and empty your mind, Chamois is highly recommended.
