Every October, the living (and the dead) prepare for a chilling night. This year, in a former convent in downtown Milan, spirits and otherworldly presences will be in the front row at the Candlelight: the Halloween Classics concert, where some of the most famous and spooky tunes from well-known movies and albums will be revived in an evocative classical version. By candlelight alone, spectators will be immersed in an atmosphere reminiscent of Count Dracula’s castle, elegant and mysterious, while the soundtracks from Beetlejuice, The Addams Family and Ghostbusters will echo in the air.

Abandon all hope, ye who enter, this concert is not for the faint of heart. Inside the Cardinal Ildefonso Schuster House, for one night only, a spooky show will be staged. Sharp violin notes and deep cello chords will join in the sublime performance of great Halloween classics, such as Michael Jackson’s iconic Thriller or Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells. For 60 minutes, spectators will be catapulted into Hell…. Or Heaven, depending on your point of view.

First a former convent and then a political prison, this as splendid as it is arcane palace hidden in the heart of Milan will be the setting for the most chilling concert ever. Built in 1232, Casa Schuster originally served as a hospital for those suffering from the “Fire of St. Anthony.” Later, it was converted into a convent for the Theatine Fathers and finally into a became a prison during the Austro-Russian occupation in the late 18th century. On Oct. 30, the souls of inmates wandering among 16th-century cloisters will welcome the brave participants, who will be seated in a darkened hall lit only by the glow of thousands of candles.
