The iconic street art of Shepard Fairey, known as Obey, has finally made its debut in Italy. The American artist, famous for his “Hope” portrait of Barack Obama, has left his indelible mark in Milan with a monumental work entitled “Tear Flame Peace.”
This 30-meter-high urban masterpiece is not only an artistic expression, but a powerful message of universal peace that is capturing everyone’s attention.
A work that speaks to the heart of Milan
The mural, created as part of the Manifestival urban art project, stands majestically in the Gallaratese neighborhood, precisely at 26 Via Adolfo Consolini. The Arrigo and Pia Pini Foundation, with the support of Orticanoodles and Wit Design, promoted this initiative that gives the city a permanent trace of art and meaning.
The meaning behind “Tear Flame Peace”
Obey’s work is a riot of symbolism and depth. On the wall of a municipal residential building, the artist has painted the word “Peace” in block letters. But it is the central image that immediately catches the eye:the face of a woman wearing a hijab, whose piercing eye seems to peer into the soul of the beholder.
From the woman’s face descends a giant tear, an element that encapsulates all the complexity of current world conflicts. Within the tear, Obey has masterfully merged the colors of the Russian and Ukrainian flags, creating a powerful visual commentary on the current geopolitical situation.
The presence of flames and a white dove within the teardrop adds additional layers of meaning, symbolizing both destruction and hope for reconciliation.
Obey: from Obama to Milan
Shepard Fairey is no stranger to striking works. His portrait of Barack Obama, which became the icon of the 2008 presidential campaign, is now on display at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, a testament to his status as an artist of international caliber.
However, “Tear Flame Peace” marks Obey’s first foray into the Italian art scene.
This work not only enriches the urban fabric of Milan, but also fits into the broader context of the exhibition “Obey – The Art of Shepard Fairey,” running at the Fabbrica del Vapore until Oct. 27.
An invitation to reflection
With “Tear Flame Peace,” Obey is not just decorating a wall: he is sending a powerful message that invites reflection on the themes of peace, conflict and reconciliation. In an increasingly divided world, the work stands as a visual reminder of the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding.
As you admire this urban masterpiece, we invite you to reflect on its deeper meaning. What does this teardrop that contains both flames and a dove represent to you? How does your sensibility interpret Obey’s message of peace?
Street art has the power to transform urban spaces into places of reflection and dialogue. With “Tear Flame Peace,” Obey has not only left his mark in Milan, but also offered the city a precious gift: a work that speaks to the heart and mind, inviting us all to become ambassadors of peace in our daily lives.
