Christmas markets, one of the best activities of this period, awaited both by those who are always looking for the most special gifts (perhaps handcrafted) to give to friends and relatives, and by fans of hot chocolate, who always find delicious proposals and variety here. Although Milan is well-stocked with Christmas markets, scattered throughout the city’s various neighborhoods, the best and largest are often just a few hours from the city and are the perfect opportunity for a weekend getaway in December.
Italy’s largest market: what to find and eat
Twinkling lights, Christmas music, little wooden houses and the smell of Glühwein-it‘s no surprise that Italy’s largest market is located in Bolzano, right in the city center. The historic and atmospheric Walther Square, where the cathedral stands, is home to a market with more than 100 little houses this year. The most popular and common products to be found among the various exhibition stands are those made of wood, gifts that are always classy, handcrafted and useful. There is no shortage of booths dedicated to the bearded gnomes that mothers like so much, hand-painted blown glass Christmas balls, leather goods and clothes that will keep you warm all winter long.
The Trentino-South Tyrol region is known for the strong flavors and tasty (but certainly not light) dishes it offers. If you are a lover of Süd-Tyrol dishes, the Bolzano market will be your paradise. Giant pretzels, stuffed Krapfen, Leberkäse, quality Speck and hot drinks to warm up a bit… What goodness!

Useful information: how long they last and how to get there from Milan
Bolzano is not that far from Milan and at this time is probably one of the best destinations for a weekend away from the Lombard city (and the fog). You can reach the markets either by train or by car, although finding parking might be tricky. Direct, high-speed trains take about 3h to reach Bolzano, but there are also cheaper options with a few changes. Even by car it takes about 3h or so to reach the city.
🎄The Bolzano market will be open from Friday, November 28, 2025 until January 6, 2026.
❄️ Hours: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Other Christmas activities in and around Bolzano
Bolzano at Christmas time certainly becomes more magical thanks to the markets, but there are more than just those in town. Among the activities to try in town is the Renon cable car, a modern three-rope lift that offers panoramic views of the Bolzano basin and the snow-capped Dolomites. In the evenings, on the other hand, to keep with the Christmas theme, Candlelight Candlelight concerts are staged in the atmospheric Mareccio Castle, and especially, on December 20 there will be a special edition just dedicated to the best Christmas tunes.
