Sometimes we take our area for granted without thinking that there are extraordinary places right close to home that deserve a trip. Such is the case with this lake considered the little brother of Lake Como. We are talking about Lake Mezzola, located in the middle of the Pian di Spagna.
Lake Mezzola: a corner of paradise

The lake in question lies north of Lake Como, from which it is separated by the last course of the Mera River, which flows through the western edge of Pian di Spagna. Lake and Pian are part of a nature reserve established by the Lombardy Region in 1983. Created to ensure a protected resting and breeding place for migratory birds. So as to safeguard and preserve the natural qualities and landscape of this area.
The role of this Reserve is also recognized by Europe: it is a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and is part of the European Ecological Network ‘Natura 2000’.
The Pian Di Spagna is a flat area of more than 1,600 hectares positioned 200 meters above sea level is the northernmost area of Lake Como with a strategic position between Valtellina and Valchiavenna, with Lake Mezzola nestled in between.

Experiencing the Reserve is possible. It advocates for careful sensibility related to the accessibility of the protected area in terms of activities concerning its enjoyment and environmental education.
The trails are accessible even to people in wheelchairs ( in the absence of snow), the boats to explore the lake are electric. And many other small arrangements to make it open to everyone with full respect for nature.
Although the Reserve has observed significant human interventions within it in the past, it currently has a low rate of urbanization . So as to protect the local flora and fauna, to learn about the history and activities we link you to the reserve’s website.
In addition to the mirror-like water of the lake, what makes the place magical is the presence of three imposing mountain ranges surrounding the plain:
- The Rhaetian Alps
- The Lepontine Alps
- The Orobian Alps
