
Now that the warm season is approaching, as well as numerous bridges between April 25 and June 2, it really feels like taking nice trips out of town, and near Milan there are several nice places without having to move too far.
Various and charming locations are attainable where you can disconnect from the metropolitan chaos. That’s why we want to propose you some destinations not too far from the Lombard capital to discover wonderful places.

Morimondo
Morimondo is among the most beautiful villages in Italy and think about it, it is only 30 km away from the center of Milan. The main site is Morimondo Abbey, built in the Middle Ages by some French Cistercian monks from Morimond. It is a suitable destination for those who love bicycle touring. In fact, the place can be easily reached by bike, thanks to the bicycle path that runs along the Naviglio di Bereguardo (from Abbiategrasso to the Naviglio di Bereguardo).
And in summer you can walk among the fireflies.
Trezzo sull’Adda
Located east of the metropolitan city of Milan, Trezzo sull’Adda is another destination for some really nice out-of-town trips near Milan. The small town offers a trip back in time. Attractions to visit include the Visconti Castle directly overlooking the river and the Alessandro Taccani hydroelectric power plant. This municipality can also be reached by bike, along the Naviglio Martesana bike path.
Also take a trip to the Oasi Le Foppe di Trezzo: it is a great place to take beautiful walks in the open air, surrounded by nature.
Monza
Monza is the third largest town in the Lombardy region in terms of population. The town is quiet and allows you to visit places surrounded by nature, such as its beautiful park and the Royal Villa. For F1 fans, there is the famous Monza national racetrack, called the Monza Eni Circuit. This is the car and motorcycle circuit that hosts periodic races and allows you to experience driving on the circuit.
Bring your camera with you to take nice pictures of the quaint old town. The city can be reached by train from Central Station (about 18 minutes).
Mantua
Mantua is a city surrounded by 3 artificial lakes, included in the list of World Heritage Sites. It is a beautiful Lombard art city with numerous monuments built by the Gonzaga family, in the 15th century. A suitable destination for those who love photography. In fact, from the San Giorgio Bridge you can admire one of the most beautiful skylines in the world. Another shot not to be missed is the romantic sunset reflecting in the waters of the Ducal Palace.
Bergamo
Bergamo is history and elegance. If you want to plan out-of-town trips near Milan, Bergamo should not be missed. There are two Bergamo’s to visit, the ‘old’ part and Città Bassa. The older area, called Città Alta, is surrounded by Venetian walls and is accessible by funicular railway. Beautiful is the city’s Duomo and Piazza Vecchia, considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.

Verbania
Verbania is a diffuse Italian municipality (consisting of several hamlets) located on the western shore of Lake Maggiore. Villa Taranto with its botanical gardens is world-renowned; if you’re lucky, you can visit during tulip week. The elegant Art Nouveau villas overlooking the lake are striking.
Varenna
Varenna is a great place to go for out-of-town trips near Milan (several small boats depart from here to take intriguing adventures). The boat from Como to Varenna gives a unique experience. Why do we recommend visiting this place? Simple, the small fishing village overlooking Lake Como is special and romantic. The colorful little houses, picturesque alleys and Villa Monastero make it one of the most elegant towns on Lake Como.
Garda Island
Lake Garda is Italy’s largest lake. A perfect destination for an out-of-town trip near Milan, with an area of 370 square kilometers. It washes three regions: Lombardy, Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto. Offering an extraordinary variety of landscapes, it is a destination that manages to please everyone, even children. Among the various destinations we recommend visiting Borghese Island, or Isola del Garda, in the territory of San Felice del Benaco.
Sirmione
Looking for a unique experience? Then you must visit Sirmione. Sirmione Castle is located on Lake Garda and is reached by a drawbridge over the water. Just think that the castle is the only way to access the historic center of Sirmione. We also recommend that you reach the Grotte di Catullo, a former Roman villa, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire surrounding area.
Monte Isola
Lake Iseo offers some truly fabulous views. Monte Isola is an Italian municipality that covers the island of the same name on the lake. The island features 11 charming villages, and for a breathtaking view we recommend a visit to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Ceriola. In 2019 Monte Isola was voted Europe’s third best tourist resort, surpassing cities such as Athens and Amsterdam.
Verona
Verona, the city of lovers, the city of Romeo and Juliet by the famous W. Shakespeare, city of art, good food. Verona is an essential stop on your out-of-town trips near Milan. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Venetian city truly offers unique sights. Opera performances and concerts at the important Arena, museums, enchanting views, Verona offers moments to always take with you to those who decide to visit.
Leggiuno (VA)
A trip to this small town in the province of Varese is worthwhile for its beautiful hermitage. Santa Caterina del Sasso is a convent built on the sloping cliff face overlooking the lake. Adrenaline-pumping and rich in history it is definitely worth a visit. If you have time left over stop in Varese, a charming Lombard capital that serves as the province of Leggiuno. A very green and pretty town, it is ideal for ending your trip on a high note.
Vigevano
Close to Pavia, Vigevano is a town to include among your stops for a trip out of town. Rich in history, Vigevano still retains traces of the Visconti-Sforza period, the most important and most expansive period in which the town became a ducal residence. Vigevano has, among other things, one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. Not to be missed are the Sforzesco Castle and the Bramante Tower.
Como
The area, very close to Milan, offers lovely lakeside resorts, such as the aforementioned Varenna, or Bellagio but also Brienno or Cernobbio, all charming villages to visit with breathtaking views. Como, however, is also a town of art, of Gothic-style monuments such as its cathedral, or the Tempio Voltiano. Not to be missed is the ascent to the top by funicular railway, which connects the town of Brunate to Como, giving you incredible views from above.
Franciacorta
Don’t you want to take a tour of the world’s most famous wine-producing area? Berlucchi, Ca’ del Bosco and Bellavista come from here. The area, in the province of Brescia, is dotted with wineries and places to do some amazing wine and local product tastings. Immerse yourself in an extraordinary multisensory experience.
Grazzano Visconti
This is an out-of-town trip more or less close to Milan, we are on the border with Emilia, but still within an hour’s drive from the Lombard capital. This medieval village is an atmospheric gem with its castle, its walls and its fairy-tale appearance. It really feels like being in a fairy tale. Access to the village is free. For the castle, admission is 16 euros (8 for children under 16). Take your car and drop in because you will feel like a change of epoch!!! If you are a fan of Wizarding Harry, there is the splendid Haunted Emporium in Grazzano to visit.
Orta San Giulio
This is the magical town on the Island of San Giulio on Lake Orta. Also among the most beautiful villages in Italy, it is truly enchanting. Located 400 meters from the shore and accessible by ferry. It is pure poetry with its little houses overlooking the lake and the natural spectacle all around. Just over an hour and a half from Milan, it will surprise you!
Valeggio sul Mincio
Just two hours from Milan you can reach this destination for a super nice out-of-town trip. Valeggio is a small town in the province of Verona famous for tortellini especially. A city of art, it is a little gem with streams running through the village and houses reflecting on the body of water. The gastronomic offerings here are of the highest level and you cannot fail to enjoy tortellini precisely, traditional tortellini stuffed with braised meat, those with chocolate, torta valeggio and the delicious torta delle rose, as well as an excellent wine offering.
Morcote and the garden of wonders

In short, the Garden, whose name is Scherrer Park after the man who created it, is a little Eden an hour’s drive from the city of Milan.

Crema
