There is a small lake nestled among the mountains of Trentino that, at first glance, looks like something out of a fairy tale. Its water is so intense turquoise that it reminds one of tropical seas, but here we are not in the Caribbean: we are just a few minutes from Lake Garda. A hidden place that leaves anyone who gets there breathless, and that few people really know about.
The secret lake near Garda
It is called Lake Tenno and it is one of the most striking treasures of Trentino. A small sheet of water that gives incredible reflections in every season: from the deep blue of winter, to the emerald green of spring, to the bright turquoise of summer.
From the Lombard capital it takes about two hours by car to reach it. A similar travel time as getting to Lake Como, but with the difference that here you will find a much less crowded place with colors that look like paintings.
A postcard-perfect landscape

The lake is surrounded by forests and mountains that provide a natural backdrop. In the center, a quaint little island sprouts up, accessible when the water subsides, making the scenery even more special. There is no shortage of natural beaches where you can relax or take a dip on hot days.
A medieval village just a stone’s throw away

Just minutes from the lake is Canale di Tenno, one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy, with stone alleys, arches and courtyards that take you back in time. A perfect match: unspoiled nature and history to be discovered in one trip.
Interesting facts that few people know about Lake Tenno
- The lake was formed by a natural landslide, which created the basin where the water collects today.
- It is called the “turquoise jewel” of Trentino precisely because of its unique hue, which changes depending on the light.
- In summer, the water is swimmable and reaches surprising temperatures for a mountain lake.
If you’re planning a different-than-usual trip to Lake Garda, take note: Lake Tenno is the surprise you don’t expect. Perfect for those who love nature, photography, and places that seem secret. Bring your camera: every shot here becomes a postcard!
