It is Backdoor43, the smallest cocktail bar in the world with only 4 square meters officially recognized. Crossing the threshold of Backdoor43 is an experience that transforms claustrophobia into pure exclusivity. Inside, the space is measured to the millimeter: one wall entirely occupied by rare bottles, soft lighting, and just four seats. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an old Victorian study, rich in wooden details, mirrors, and small vintage objects that make use of every available centimeter. Even the bathroom is a small masterpiece of engineering, skillfully inserted into the limited space of the structure.
Backdoor43 boasts a fine collection of vintage whiskeys (over 200 labels). Entering here is like stepping back in time, bringing to mind the speakeasies of the 1920s, typical of the Big Apple during Prohibition.
How to order a drink (without going inside)
For those without a reservation, you can book online, as the bar offers a truly unique ‘street’ option. A small peephole window opens on the façade:
- The ritual: knock and wait for the peephole to open.
- The bartender: only their hands and face, hidden behind the famous Guy Fawkes mask (V for Vendetta), will appear.
- The order: choose your takeaway cocktail, served in personalized glasses, perfect for a stroll along the canal.

Sipping a cocktail in the world’s smallest bar is a privilege reserved for the few. Here are the strict rules for enjoying the full experience:
- Reservations are mandatory: forget about dropping in to “see if there’s room.” The four stools are almost always occupied.
- Limited time: each reservation slot lasts exactly 90 minutes. Once the time is up, you have to give up your seat to the next four lucky people.
- Total privacy: once the door closes behind you, the place is all yours. You will be alone with the masked bartender, who will prepare drinks tailored to your tastes, transforming the experience into one of the most intimate and private in all of Milan. You can even choose your own playlist.
