New projects on the way for Milan. The new year began with two important new developments for the city: a ban on outdoor smoking, except for a guaranteed minimum distance of 10 meters between people, and the announcement of the opening of the Piazzale Loreto construction sites. By the end of 2025, Corso Buenos Aires will become the grand boulevard that has long been talked about. But that’s not all, a new urban district is being built, MIND, Milano Innovation District, a great new neighborhood, an ecosystem as it is called by those who conceived it that is more sustainable and life-friendly.
And it doesn’t end there. After the opening of the M4 metro, Mayor Sala confirmed that the line will also reach the town of Segrate; the section will pass under Idroscalo, where there will be an additional stop. There is no date yet but the project is there and the money from the ministry as confirmed by the mayor.
These are important years for Milan, only one away from the ‘inauguration of the long-awaited Winter Olympics Milan Cortina 2026. That’s why all this frenzy for the redevelopment of Milan’s urban layout.
New projects on the way for Milan
- Among the various new projects for the redevelopment of Milan is the opening of the Piazzale Loreto construction sites for the complete makeover of Corso Buenos Aires. It will become for the much talked about boulevard that connects Porta Venezia to the southern borders of NoLo the neighborhood north of Loreto. The Corso will have a new bike lane that will be dyed red. one-way,wider sidewalks, wider parking spaces for cars, benches and lots of greenery. The intent is to make one of Milan’s busiest and most heavily traveled streets safer and easier. A restyling that looks to the great European boulevards.
- Another among the big projects for Milan will be the replacement of the cobblestones in the city’s streets: the all-cubic pavement the nightmare for two-wheelers that makes two-wheelers jerk, at and sometimes fall, as well as stumble as well as pedestrians because it is often uneven and bumpy. Goodbye cobblestones. This pavement will be replaced with significantly more even walking surfaces.
There is no shortage of protests about this. There are those who want to keep it as it represents a symbol of Milan with deep historical and architectural significance and those who do not. The mayor himself has communicated that the streets where it should be left should be decided, provided its layout is improved. And the streets where to remove it and replace it with asphalt. We are not talking about a work done this year but it will be done in the coming years in the following streets for the moment identified: the intersection between Via San Vittore and Via Olivetani, near the Museum of Science and Technology. Then the one between Via Castelfidardo and Piazza Principessa Clotilde. Finally, the stretch between Via dell’Orso and Via Monte di Pietà.
And again.
- Now we move on to the Isola neighborhood where the construction site to transform the via Borsieri parking lot into green space has been confirmed.
- Let’s continue with the M4 subway that was just inaugurated last fall. According to Mayor Beppe Sala’s confirmation, the line should reach the municipality of Segrate via Idroscalo reaching a wider catchment area. While, the tender for the M1 connection from Bisceglie to the Olmi neighborhood has been published.
- The construction sites continue to give life to a new district the MIND (Milano Innovation District) that presents itself as the new Italian center of scientific excellence. As we report from the website: it is a large contemporary international district, an environment of knowledge and sustainable growth, open to anyone who innovates, does research or studies, to institutions and companies, to people’s lives. The one-million-square-meter area on the outskirts of Milan will be created near the Fiera and in the vicinity of Galeazzi Hospital. The horizon of the project is to give rise to and nurture an ecosystem for the socio-economic growth of the country. A true urban district, dynamic, green and cared for. A model of urban transformation to a model of life.
- In Via Rizzoli another ambitious project is on the way, in 2025 a new building will be born, named Welcome Feeling at Work with the idea of constructing a biophilic building, according to the principles of what is called “the architecture of life” i.e., work spaces that integrate architecture and natural elements, made with eco-sustainable materials, powered by renewable energy and with consumption control and water recovery systems. On the website we read: Welcome cares for people and nature, promoting a working and living environment that is friendly to the Planet.
- South of Milan, on the other hand, a new skyscraper will arrive in the Fondazione Prada area about 145 meters by 28 floors and will serve to group the scattered offices of A2A under one roof. The skyscraper’s special feature is the belvedere that bisects the building with hanging gardens open to all.
- A new botanical tower will take place in the Via Pirelli and Melchiorre Gioia area. The works, entrusted to the architectural firms composed of Stefano Boeri Architetti, Diller Scofidio + Renfro are already active. The aforementioned botanical tower will be created, a true green lung with 1,700 square meters of vegetation. While the former municipal office building at 39 Via Pirelli will undergo a major redevelopment with a glazed cladding and a panoramic terrace on the top floor.
As we have seen, Milan is always buzzing and never stops, this year even more so with the opening soon of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics .
